Richard John Rossetto joyfully announces his 20,000th hit on his personal web site http://rossettoink.com/. As such he is decided to now more fully concentrate his efforts in that direction. When I first started blogging here at Art+Culture I really had no idea where it might take me or what influence it might have on my career. In truth I answered an ad that stated the possibilities of being paid to write online. Before that I had only use my site as a type of advertising agent or as a means to publish my images online. I had no real clue of what blogging was or what a powerful medium it could be. So when this opportunity presented itself I had no expectations, I sure as hell did not expect to be interviewing some my favourite artists, nor did I realize that through this medium I would learn so much about art or be able to give back to my community. As things progressed I found it became a more and more imperative part of my creative process.

The more I wrote, the more I learned, the more I learned, the more I wrote, the more I wrote and learned the more creative I was. The more of what I wrote and learned that I applied to my practice the better an artist I became. All the while becoming a better writer at the same time, all of this literally snowballed into something far bigger than I imagined, IE the persona whose work you are now reading. Don’t get me wrong I had a lot of similar ideas before I started writing here and I was also pretty well known through out Canada having lived in and been part of many art scenes across this country. This just gave me a venue to practice, hone my skills and clarify my direction. As that direction has been clarified I can now clearly see that although Art + Culture has provided me with a great many opportunities it is now time for me to start to concentrate more fully on my own endeavours. I also figure that by me leaving it will create opportunities for others to practice this trade.

My work there will be much the same as it was here, with many of the same projects and ideas such as: Success for Artists, Publish or Perish, Canadian Art History 101, Curators Corner which will now be called “Diary of a Mad Man”, interviews with the artists, reviews and of course My Imaginary Art Collection. I also might have a few surprises up my sleeve and so you never know what might happen.

In closing I’d like to thank Chris Vroom and the wonderful staff at Art+ Culture for all the opportunity’s presented to me while writing here. It has been a blast and I could not have created the momentum I have in my career without you. I would like to close by inviting you all to http://rossettoink.com/ on December 25 for my annual Heavy Metal Christmas. I will be stopping in once and a while to see how you guys are progressing and if you ever need lift you know where to come and who to contact. Here is a link to photos of my latest Positive Word Painting Commission and a basic walk through of how it works. A few last thoughts from some of my favorite entertainers…

Saturday the 18th of December at 7 pm will open at Studio Tommaseo (via del Monte 2/1 Trieste) the exhibition of Dušica Dražić, the young serbian artist winner of the 2010 edition of the Young European Artist Award organized every year by Trieste Contemporanea. In more than ten years of hte Award, the artist who received this prize have confirmed in time to be leading and attentive interpreters of the European scene, as happened, for instance, to Pawel Althamer (2002) and Ivan Moudov (2006).

Dušica Dražić is an artist and independent curator, born in 1979 in Belgrade, where she lives and works. After graduated from the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade, she continued her professional development at the Bauhaus University in Weima. She was granted with DAAD scholarship for 2005/2006 and exhibited in various european cities.

After having been invited in Trieste, the artist has obtained an important international acknoledgment, the ISPS RESIDENCY (The international Studio & Curatorial Program) in New York, a residency for emerging contemporary artists. This young Serbian artist's work deeply and originally explores all the declinations of the dialogue between space, creative action and viewer's reaction. Also, the exhibition conceived for the Studio Tommaseo, Looks like we've been here before, investigates the expectations created in the public by the spatial structure of the exhibition and plays with an alienating overturning of the usual roles of artist and spectator: the visitor is, in fact, welcomed by the artist's applause, filmed and projected in loop on the gallery walls.

The curator of the project in Trieste is Aleksandra Estela Bjelica Mladenović, curator of the Belgrade Cultural Center.

Now it’s time for you to hear the good. I am pretty sore this morning from some HEAVY training and I’m moving around my house like a 98 year old man.

The day the lights went on was a pretty miraculous moment, unless you’ve ever lived without basic “necessities” you will never know the joy of putting your hands under hot running water for the first time in many months. The experience proved a great deal to me and I learned a lot of about how spoiled we are in the modern world and how weak we have become because of it. Now I am not negating the luxuries with which we live. I will say I now realize there’s no need for a child or adult to cry because they don’t have the latest gadgets. Life is beautiful just as it is, with only the abilities of our minds and bodies. They are far greater than you might think.

The power was turned back on at the beginning of November which was a good thing because in mid October it started getting cold. Let’s remember Canada is called “The Great White North” for reasons. Towards the ending of this I was working with about 12 hours of daylight utilising one lamp to continue making work. I Often slept just as many hours because it was too cold in the house. So I just snuggled under covers and let my mind go to the most outer extensive the universe. It was out there man.

unfinished commission 2

In November a series of events also happened which helped change my fate. I had a private showing at an Associated Professors house. This professor commissioned one work then bought another. She also introduced me to her friends and associates. Which then lead to another sale and another commission, these two sales brought my grand total sales up to $8000 this year. Not bad considering I didn’t really have a plan when setting out. The show was great, the work looked wonderful in a private setting and it was a great way to meet new collectors. I highly suggest this as a way of showing your work. Surprisingly out of a group of about 10, 7 people where very interested in the arts. With that money I managed to pay off all the hydro, and have start paying back some over due rent. I’m still behind on rent, I am in much more comfortable situation now.

Out of curiosity I divided $8000 by 52 then further divided that number by 30 hours( I guarantee a I work far more than 30 hours a week) to see how much I made per hour. The grand total was $5.55 an hour. That works out to about $3.50 less than minimum wage here. Just barely enough to survive on through a year, had I been better prepared when I started out I’d probably could have easily lived off that, taking good care of my daughter as well. Earlier in the year when I’d made some sales I would go a little bonkers and spend freely, which then led to living without some basic necessities.

And at this point I’d like to clarify some misunderstandings. Now I am not a trust fund kid, but that doesn’t mean my family isn’t well prepared. One of the main reasons I’ve had so much confidence in taking my artistic practice as far as I have has been the conscious knowledge that my daughter’s education is paid for and that my family has money and resources put aside. So if you see me on the streets and want condescend the fact I CHOSE to go without for now in order to have later. Please note I have more gold in a safe than most people will ever see in their lives. It’s called saving I suggest you do it too. The decisions I've made in order to progress my career were made with clear conscious knowledge and direction. So if I ever tell you “FUCK OFF” it is because I can and I don’t have to accept what ever raw deal you might offer. Not because I am delusional and living in a fantasy world. In general I choose to be polite and nice as I’d like to be a great role model for others not because I have to. It is my modus operendi. Living without brought me to very spiritual and beautiful place. It is something I would never give up. As I can now accept things as they are much easier.

a portion of Buddha's Wealth

And for those of you who wonder what my child thought. She thought it was wonderful and consistently wrote me notes like ” Der Dad, I love you and your success” and “Dear Dad you are success”. She is a real champion and although at seven she sometimes misspells” dear” she always spells “SUCCESS” properly. And I think that says it all, right there. When asked what she thought of living without electricity she thought it was GREAT, “like camping” and it was. Beautiful silence all the time and I sometimes wonder whether I'll own a phone again.

Now it’s well into December, as a matter of fact seven days till Christmas, twelve days to my birthday 15 days to the NEW YEAR and I am ready for it all. We tend to take Christmas pretty light around my house, there are oddles of presents, no tree and no Christmas dinner. The reason being for this, is that as my daughter is still young and so we tend to celebrate Christmas dinner at her mother’s house. And there’s a lesson for all you. Just because her mother and I could no longer cohabitate together doesn't mean we can not spend a number of hours together on Christmas. If you have a kid and are separated “SUCK IT UP”, it may be a minor inconvenience to you, it would make all world of difference in your child’s life and future and that is how we roll.

In closing I’d like to note a number of opportunities have arisen over the past months, including the possibility of a television show. I guess tough, intelligent guys who know about art and culture, with one missing tooth where in short order this year and therefore I was approached. WE are Training HARD at http://www.araacademy.com/ getting ready for a number of fights next year, as well as continuing to training young warriors minds. I am still studying the art of self improvement daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and all of this leaves MANY, MANY things up in the air, which is a pretty exciting place to be. I plan on continuing my efforts of inspiring the masses, so please feel free to stop in here or http://rossettoink.com/, for a little boost.

Finally I would like to wish you all a SAFE AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS from my family to yours, YOU HELPED MAKE THIS YEAR INCREDIBLE, THANKS SO MUCH FOR INSPIRING ME to take it to another level.
